Global Communities for Change

Voice-choice

In just a couple of decades, globalization has changed the world dramatically.
New economic powers – China, India, Brazil etc – have surfaced and have restructured international trade and business. Migration patterns are changing the populations of both Northern and Southern cities. ICT has facilitated global communication, but at the same time it seems that there is less mutual understanding around the globe.

The different crises (e.g. the financial crisis, the climatic crisis, the food crisis, the energy crisis) that have broken out these past few years, are yet another reminder that the North-South divide is increasingly irrelevant, also for the development sector. What happens in the North has an impact on what plays out ‘there’ and vice versa.

These developments have a fundamental impact on international cooperation.
Cordaid strongly believes that development is essentially about change in human and in power relations. The ambition of Cordaid is to be the best possible social change agent we can be. To meet the challenges we are faced with, new international relationships are needed. And we need to change the existing ones.

Cordaid launched the concept of Global Communities of Change. The GCoC idea puts the emphasis on cooperation rather on development, building alliances, joining forces in the pursuance of an overlapping change agenda.
The GCoC concept will inevitably elicit numerous questions from all stakeholders. It is a work in progress. We need the input of our partners and other stakeholders to develop the concept further.
A dialogue on the Global Communities of change has started in the Voice & Choice room. Join the discussion and help shaping the future of international cooperation!
