PARTICIPATION OF CORDAID AND LOBBYPARTNERS AT WORLD URBAN FORUM 5 IN RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL, FROM 22 TO 26 OF MARCH 2010
The urban programme of Cordaid “Acces to Basis Services for Slum dwellers” has a strong focus on housing. Cordaid’s work is centred on empowering poor and excluded people and improving their living conditions. Apart from supporting initiatives of civil society organisations, Cordaid started a joint lobby with several ngos in Peru, Cameroon and Congo to improve the accessibility to finance for housing for low income groups in cities as Lima, Yaoundé and Kinshasa.
In these tree countries a lobby group did a research on the housing situation of urban poor and on the existing models of finance for housing for low income groups. They realized exchange visits to Mali and Peru to know about the various existing financing models. One of the issues is micro finance for housing and the creation of housing cooperatives. They formulated proposals for social housing policy and are lobbying now their governments.
At WUF 5 Cordaid will promote innovative financial models for affordable housing. A network event will be organized on affordable housing – financing – for slum dwellers.
Cordaid also will promote the multi stakeholder approach in urban development at community level. The Urban Matters program, developed by Cordaid and supported by the Dutch Ministry of Housing and Environment, combines Dutch expertise from the private sector (housing, water, energy, sanitation) with the knowledge and experience of cbo’s, ngo’s and local governments.
Cordaid will participate in the CSO/NGO’s round table organized by HIC and in the Global Land Tool Network roundtable.
Partners of Cordaid will contribute to the networking event of the Huairou Commission “Democratizing decentralization: Women take the lead”.
